Just do your thing

Jan 19, 2024

This time, I’m writing this newsletter from the train to Paris where I’m going to be attending another design exhibition Maison&Objet. The IMM event in Cologne has already ended, and I must say it was such an enriching experience meeting new people, getting to know new designs, not to mention sketching incredibly inspiring concepts, like this one, for example:

This interior was love at first sight, I even drew it in exactly 1 hour! Yes, for the entire composition including all the colors, shadows, and details.

Staying active, curious, and visiting new places are all inspiration, which comes to us naturally, without even asking for it.

Okay, and now on to our today’s newsletter subject. It was inspired by one podcast I recently discovered and which changed my life. Yes, I know, it is a big statement to make, but you know, sometimes spontaneous encounters or discoveries just feel right from the beginning on, and this was exactly the case with that podcast.

The name of the podcast is The Mindset Mentor and it is hosted by Rob Dial.

The episode I’m talking about is called “Doing the ‘thing’”. After that episode I finally fulfilled my small goal - a real life YouTube video, without any scripts or voiceovers, I’d been meaning to film it for I don’t know how many months… I’m just too much of a perfectionist, but that’s another story.

So, in that episode, Rob was talking about how preparing for doing THAT BIG THING, BIG GOAL that you’ve meaning to do for almost decades, analyzing it, creating all the strategies, listening to all motivational podcasts and videos possible, DOES NOT MEAN ACTUALLY DOING THE THING.

I don’t know about you, but this is SO FREAKING RELATABLE!

I’ve written 50+ YouTube video ideas, visualized the outcome and how amazing it would be to finally hit post ,and connect with more people. But… that’s it. It all stayed in my head, in the planning phase. Nothing else had happened after that.

Until recently, I said to myself ENOUGH.

Imagine how many opportunities we lose because of fear of being judged, because of thinking that we have all the time in the world, because we think that we aren’t ready yet?

Imagine how fulfilled  we could live if we just let all this go, sat down and kept doing THE THING on a consistent basis? Without endless analysis paralysis?

Another crucial component of doing that thing is doing it EVERY SINGLE DAY. Don’t let your emotions define your day. My father used to say this to me as a kid, but… we get wiser as we get older, right? :D

Let me share one more story before ending this newsletter and heading off to Paris Est.

One of my THINGS last year was to start going to the gym on a consistent basis. Without any excuses. 3-4 times per week. Period.
Just to be clear: last time I was super consistent with my fitness routine was round about in 2017. Then, interior design and entrepreneurship happened.

So, the first 2 weeks were tough - I was literally forcing myself to go to the gym. Fighting with myself. The comfortable part of me kept telling me something like “come on, you hadn’t done fitness for so many years, a couple of more years won’t hurt” or “you have too much work to do, let’s go there tomorrow”. And we all know what happens when we say “tomorrow”. Tomorrow = NEVER.

Now, 4 months later, I’ve become SO comfortable with going to the gym every single week that I don’t overthink it any more. It’s become as normal as running to the bathroom (well… I had to give that example, haha).

Same WITH EVERYTHING. Drawing, social media, filming videos, meeting 10 new people every day. We can train this muscle and change our lives.

Remember, it is not about being special or talented. It is about a clear structure, goal, and consistency.

Greetings from Paris!

Till next Friday :)
