Confidence is Your Superpower

Dec 13, 2024

If you think of confidence as something you only earn after perfecting your work, or believe that only a few “lucky” or “talented” people are born with it, let me tell you - confidence has NOTHING to do with perfection or a special gene passed down through generations. And, if your uncle wasn’t Picasso, it doesn't mean you don’t have a chance to succeed with your art (I love using extreme examples, I know, but they’re the best way to highlight the absurdity of these beliefs).

Please tell me you’ve sometimes heard that annoying little voice inside your head saying, “Nah, this drawing/project/idea of yours is SO bad that it will ruin you right away.” Okay, maybe not that dramatic, but I’m referring to that endless “my work isn’t THERE yet,” “One more attempt and THEN, it’ll be perfect,” “I’m not doing enough, so the harder I work, the better I’ll get,” or simply, “OMG, have you seen how X expert does their work so amazingly? Who am I to think I can do that too?” And the craziest part? Even if you’re already an expert, these kinds of thoughts still creep in from time to time!

The power of these negative phrases is that they paralyze us so much that we end up delaying or quitting our ideas/projects without even giving them a chance. Oh, how many brilliant ideas have been forgotten because of this...

👇
But enough space has been given to those discouraging thoughts. Now, let’s move on to the action list. First and foremost, confidence has nothing to do with your current skill level. Why?

Magnus Resch, in his book How to Sell Art, writes that in today’s art world, skills matter less than ever! Instead, it’s marketing and confidence that make or break a career. He argues that being able to sell yourself, your vision, and your work is often more important than mastering every technical detail.

✏️ This is because confidence allows you to show up authentically, take the necessary risks, and, most importantly, view failures and challenges as crucial steps toward reaching new levels.

Confidence is a muscle you can build, and it will take you further than any technical skill set ever will! Let’s print this out or use it as a phone background, because, honestly, during all of my studies, we were taught the opposite! Like, “Your skills aren’t good enough, and you’ll never succeed.” Hell no, I will - and HOW!
Now, some of you might be thinking, “This all sounds good, but how on Earth can I develop that level of confidence that will beat those discouraging thoughts and help me build a strong brand?”

Glad you asked, let’s talk about clear action points.

As I just mentioned - ACTION POINTS. Confidence is built by doing what you said you were going to do, by taking action toward your goal. Let’s say you want to learn about marketing. Instead of fantasizing about how and where to start, → find books and mentors, read, and book consultations. Then, after getting the first clear steps, do them and develop the next steps. And so on, and so on.

This is the problem many of us face - we THINK SO MUCH, as if thinking were our job and we’re getting paid for it. “What if,” “How to start,” “What if,” “I have no idea.” Well, if you have no idea, change the narrative in your head: “I may not know yet, but I’m doing everything in my power to find the answer.”

Now, before we wrap up today’s newsletter, let’s talk about two key figures in art and design: Andy Warhol and Dieter Rams (can you imagine that Dieter Rams and I both studied at the same interior design school in Wiesbaden, Germany??) Anyway :D

  • Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they’re deciding, make even more art.”
    – Andy Warhol

Warhol’s confidence in using everyday objects like soup cans and celebrities as art subjects made him one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

  • “The details are not the details. They make the design.”
    – Dieter Rams

Rams’ belief in the importance of attention to detail is a reminder that confidence in your work can often be found in the small, thoughtful elements that elevate a design from good to great.

  • I’ll finish with this powerful quote from one of my mentors, Ryan Serhant:
“Take care of the work, and the work will take care of you.”

‼️ Confidence is built by showing up, trusting your process, and committing to the work - even when it feels uncertain. And that’s exactly why my 3D Design and Drawing Academy exists - to provide you with a creative environment, immense support from other professionals worldwide, a clear action plan, and inspiration to keep going, with my LIVE support too!
